Do you own a grooming salon or mobile grooming unit? The AKC® Safety in the Salon course helps you show your customers, community, and employees how important you consider a pet’s safety while in your care.  

The AKC® Safety in the Salon course covers vital information on safety measures and protocols within the dog grooming facility and can be completed at your own pace. 

Topics Covered: 

  • Dog groomer and safety protocols
  • Best practices focusing on pet care and safety
  • Accident avoidance and sanitation
  • How to handle special cases 

All salons/businesses who complete the course, exam, and application will receive a certificate of completion. 

Once the application is approved, you will receive valuable marketing support, including:

  • AKC® S.A.F.E. Groomer/Salon Oath counter card
  • Free profile listing on AKC GroomerFinder for one year
  • AKC® S.A.F.E. digital badge

** Salons or mobile units are expected to have at least one AKC® S.A.F.E. Groomer onsite during grooming business hours.

Here is the course outline:

1. Part 1 Introduction to Salon Safety

This module will cover AKC S.A.F.E. groomer and salon expectations, safety rules, and decision making.

2. Part 2 Handling Animals

This module will cover retrieving pets from owners, refusing service when appropriate, lifting a dog’s legs, grooming brachycephalic skull dogs, and handling cats.

3. Part 3 Grooming Services

This module will cover educating your clients about pet care and services and grooming techniques to prevent injuries to the pet and yourself.

4. Part 4 Groomer Safety

This module will cover steps groomers can take to minimize their risk of injury and using protective gear when grooming animals.

5. Part 5 The Grooming Facility

This module will cover how to maintain a safe salon entrance, grooming work area, and best practices for cage-free grooming salon.

6. Part 6 Rules and Regulations

This module will cover groomer liability insurance, relevant OSHA regulations, and working with inspectors.

7. SAFE Salon Final Exam

8. Application and Documentation
