Become an AKC S.A.F.E Certified Groomer or Salon
The American Kennel Club recognizes that grooming is essential to the overall health and comfort of pets. As reputable and quality pet care professionals, groomers and salon owners should consider the safety and well-being of the pets entrusted to their care.
The AKC Safety in the Salon course, which is the core of the AKC S.A.F.E. Grooming Certification Program (Safety, Assurance, Fundamentals, Education), covers best practices focusing on pet care, health and safety, and provides vital information on safety measures and protocols within the grooming facility. Topics include accident avoidance, pet and zoonotic disease awareness, sanitation and how to handle special cases.
Groomers and Salon owners who pass the exam at the end of the course, are eligible to become AKC S.A.F.E. Certified Groomers or Salons, which entitles them to valuable marketing support from the AKC, including an AKC S.A.F.E. Certified Groomer or Salon profile and badge recognition on AKC GroomerFinder.
Continuing education is also a key component in the AKC S.A.F.E. Grooming Certification program. After the initial certification period, S.A.F.E. Certified Groomers and Salons are required to take the AKC Safety in the Salon Recertification course in order to maintain their AKC S.A.F.E. Certification status. AKC S.A.F.E. Certified Groomers must recertify every two years and AKC S.A.F.E. Certified Salons must recertify annually.
